Summary

Public health nutrition is concerned with the nutritional health of populations, from local communities to the national or global level. Many countries are now experiencing emerging epidemics of obesity and diet-related diseases such as diabetes, cancer, coronary vascular disease and osteoporosis. Yet most of the world's population still struggles to gain sufficient food for health and suffers malnutrition and under-nutrition. Public Health Nutrition is a tool used both for health promotion and disease prevention. This new international text endeavours to answer the following questions: bull; What is the best approach to promoting public health nutrition? bull; How do we deal with the problems of over and under nutrition and food insecurity? bull; What can we do to manage diet-related disease? bull; How can we put the theory into practice? This book looks at PHN from a variety of key perspectives, including population groups, current priorities in PHN, practice lessons and the underlying principles and knowledge. Uniquely, it combines biomedical, social science, epidemeological, humanties, political and economic perspectives to provide a comprehensive public health approach and involves a broad mix of international authors, drawing expertise and examples from the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the USA and employing a comparative approach within each chapter. The book fatures case studies, key concepts, web links and further readings, and each chapter is concise and to-the-point. This text is a strong addition to our already strong public health portfolio, that also brings a truly international flavour to the HSW list offering.
