Summary

The current diagnostic methods for the great variety ofmicrobial agents affecting health are clearlyunsatisfactory. New important pathogens have emergedincluding the agent responsible for bovine spongiformencephalopathy. Moreover, there is an increasing need formore accurate microbial control of our environment, and ofthe food and water we consume. What is needed are rapid,sensitive and reliable procedures which, on the one hand,should be suitable for automation and, onthe other hand,presented in a cost-effective version suitable for fielduse. Including new biochemical approaches, such aspolymerase chain reaction, recombinant gene products andsynthetic peptides, these needs are discussed in theseprotocols of the RAMI-90 congress.
