Summary

September 11, 2001, the day that the world paused in its rotation. This book is Esther Chao's reaction to what has come to be called 9/11. With it, she hopes to capture a small moment in history, based on her own experiences and observations but drawing together in one place something all Americans shared and will continue to share. In her mind and through her camera, she found connections with the tragic events in New York City; Washington, D.C.; and Shanksville, Pennsylvania to other symbols of America's strength: flag displays in Beverly Hills, where she lives, and Las Vegas, Nevada, where she visits; meetings in New Mexico of surviving Navajo Code Talkers who played such a critical role during World War II; a retrospective from American servicemen who served in this generation's wars; the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., and the American Cemetery in Normandy where so many American heroes lie. In drawing those threads together, this book expresses Esther's condolences to the people who lost family and friends. Please take it as her appreciation to the people who contribute every day to make our American way of life so special. Book jacket.
