Following his 1944 commission as a weather officer, he studied at the Harvard-MIT Radar School. He received the D.Sc. (1955) in meteorology from MIT while working at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory where he led the weather radar research program for 18 years. In 1959-1960 he was an NSF Senior Fellow at Imperial College in London. He also taught at the University of Chicago and subsequently headed both the Atmospheric Technology Division and National Hail Research Experiment at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. In 1977 he established and headed the Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center where he is currently a Distinguished Visiting Scientist.
