Summary

The 4th United States Coloured Troops regiment saw much action in the eastern theatre of operations from late 1863 until mid-1865. Following brief but intensive periods of recruiting and training, the regiment -- drawn largely from freedmen and liberated slaves in the Middle Atlantic and New England states -- served in Major General Benjamin F Butler's Army of the James, and saw action in the Bermuda Hundred and Richmond-Petersburg campaigns. Edward G Longacre blends his unique insight of political and social history in this new book.
