Summary

In reaction to the centralizing nation-building efforts of states in nineteenth-century Europe, many regions began to define their own identity. In thirteen stimulating essays, specialists analyze why regional identities became widely celebrated towards the end of that century and why some considered themselves part of the new national self-image.

Author Biography

JOOST AUGUSTEIJN lectures at Leiden University, the Netherlands. He has previously held posts at Trinity College, Dublin and Queens University Belfast. He is author of From Public Defiance to Guerrilla Warfare. The Experience of Ordinary Volunteers in the Irish War of Independence 1916-1921 (1996), and Patrick Pearse, The Making of a Revolutionary (2010) as well as editor of several volumes.


ERIC STORM lectures at Leiden University, the Netherlands. His research interests include Spanish history and the construction of national and regional identities in Western Europe. He is the author of: La perspectiva del progreso, Pensamiento político en la España del cambio de siglo (Madrid 2001), The Culture of Regionalism: Art, Architecture and International Exhibitions in France, Germany and Spain, 1890-1939 (Manchester 2010) and El descubrimiento del Greco, Nacionalismo y arte moderno (Madrid 2011).
