Summary

English summary: Bodily and sensual experiences of music are of vital importance for the identification with religious traditions - this is the central result of the Isabel Laack's ethnographic field study on the use of music in Glastonbury, a town called the epicentre of alternative spirituality in England. The research includes a comprehensive survey of religious groupings in Glastonbury - ranging from Christians to neo-Hindus and Pagans such as the Goddess People and the Druids - and portrays the diversity and flexibility of religious identity constitution in contemporary spirituality. At the heart of the study lies a thorough analysis of the music being used within this religious field, covering religious musical styles and bands, music theatre, the famous Glastonbury Festival, dances and sound healing practices. Based on the interpretation of this material, Laack formulates a theoretical model highlighting the role of music in processes of local identity constitution. Aspects such as the efficacy of music, experiences of community, the invention of tradition and collective autobiographies and the aesthetic-musical identification with traditions are discussed and the latest approaches from anthropology and musicology creatively combined. The study represents one of the first comprehensive insights into the research field music and religion seen from the perspective of the academic study of religions. Furthermore, it addresses scholars of religion interested in Glastonbury in particular and contemporary religiosity in general.
