Summary

Was it mere chance that the most successful economies of the second half of the twentieth century were all found in East and Southeast Asia, a region of world consumed by confrontation and conflict? In this important contribution to understanding both the Asian economic miracle and the 1997-8 crisis, Richard Stubbs provides a systematic assessment of the main explanations to date, offering his own original analysis which emphasizes the role played by the Cold War and the general geopolitical context.
