Summary

Restudies allow us to trace how people, families, households, and settlements have experienced and contributed to change. Although a number of restudies have been undertaken in Asia, this work is the first to marshal and integrate a series of restudies, structuring them using the lenses of evolving class relations and the production of poverty and prosperity. Class was central to the agrarian transformations literature of the 1970s and 1980s and offers a conceptual fulcrum around which processes can be explored from the perspective of the twenty-first century. The book draws on restudies from six countries (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam) to explore how a multidimensional conceptualization of class continues to be a valuable route to understanding the production and reshaping of poverty and prosperity under conditions of agrarian transformation. Drawing from an impressive range of studies, Revisiting Rural Places offers vivid and persuasive analyses of the changes in the rural and agricultural spheres of Southeast Asia.
