The book is a history of Thomas Merton a Trappist Monk who vehemently opposed the Vietnam War and met prominent figures in the world that helped him become known across religious lines. John F. Kennedy's fight for Civil Rights is discussed as is the fight that Martin Luther King Jr. fought in order for minorities to achieve equal rights in the United States. John C. Trejo also includes an essay about Cesar Chaves who leads Mexican-American farmworkers to justice by creating a union to provide them with health insurance and other necessities. Finally Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society is examined and what the pros and cons of it were.
