Excerpts

"Josh, Josh...they're calling you to the podium!" Rose gently pushes Joshua into motion. His heart leaps into his throat. He jumps up, almost knocking his notes to the floor. Rose grabs them in time, handing them back to her flustered husband. Pastor Begg smiles warmly from the front of the church. "Please welcome our very special guest speaker today, Joshua Banks." Joshua takes a few hesitant steps toward the edge of the pew, until Rose kicks him in the side of the leg with her winter boot. "Go, Josh!" He shakes his head and takes a deep breath, walking quickly up the center aisle to the pastor, whose hand is extended. "Thank you, sir," he whispers, shaking Pastor Begg's hand firmly. His notes are temporarily forgotten. Joshua walks toward the podium, acutely aware of the heavy silence from the church pews. He takes a brief moment to adjust his earpiece; glancing back to the sound booth, he gets a wave of acknowledgment to begin. Time seems to stand still as he places his crumpled notes on the stand in front of him and clears his throat. He begins to feel a bit more comfortable now that he's taken the first steps to be here today. "Good morning, everyone. My name is Joshua Banks. Many of you may not know me; I've only been attending this church for a few months." He smiles apologetically. "My wife, Rosemary..." He points to his lovely wife, who extends a polite wave. "You might have heard of the struggles, as well as adventures my family has recently encountered. I came today to talk to you about life-changing events last summer and the lessons we learned from our experience." Turning to his church leader, Josh continues. "I appreciate Pastor Begg allowing me to come today. What I have to tell you is about a time I walked with Jesus, spending a number of weeks in His company in the Jordan Valley over 2000 years ago." Joshua pauses a moment to make eye contact with the crowd and detects a gasp or two from the middle of the church.
