Summary

English summary: Over the course of 150 years, Roman medallions developed into an important medium of imperial self-representation. After substantial impetuses of innovation under Nero and Domitian, medallion production experienced its first peak under Hadrian. An in-depth analysis of the material was lackin, until now. Peter Franz Mittag has cataloged more than 100 pre-Hadrian and 220 Hadrian medallions and placed them in their historical context. Interpretations of the sometimes ambiguous images provide indications of events or recipients and thus offer insight into the structures of imperial communication with various relevant groups. Concordances and indices allow for rapid oversight. German text.
