Summary

English summary: Why did all Russian tsars of the 18th Century put considerable effort into poaching doctors from Western European universities in order to set up appropriate medical training in their own country? Certainly foreign knowledge was expensive and its therapeutic superiority questionable - but it helped in building a medical management system, with the standardization of military medicine, and in the education of the Russian subjects. But what effect did this new medicine actually have on culture and society? Making use of case studies on diseases as well as of natural and physical representations, it can be shown that at least in the secular elite, "Western" medicine found popularity even if it did not supplant traditional medicine. German text.
