Summary

This book examines the archaeology and history of the fortified churches which form a remarkable and unique feature of the Anglo-Scottish border. It is the first ever detailed study of the adaptation of church buildings in this region as defensible refuges in the period of war and unrest between the late thirteenth and late seventeenth centuries.
Dr. Brooke presents the material in topographical format, thus enabling the reader to take a comprehensive view of these churches. The book also includes site-plans and numerous illustrations.

Author Biography

Dr. Christopher J. Brooke is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a Special Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Nottingham, and head of Heritage at Leicestershire County Council.
