Summary

This novel is set in the rough and violent gold mining region of Brazil at the end of the nineteenth century. Saraminda is a young prosititute bought at auction at the mining boss clement Tamba, but who controls the real power sets a train of murder in motion.

Author Biography

Novelist, poet and essayist, Jose Sarney (Maranhao, Brazil, 1930) is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. His first novel, 'O Dono do Mar' ('Master fo the Sea') has been translated into English, French, Arabic, Greek, and Romanian. Sarney was president of Brazil from 1985-1990 and is currently a member of the Brazilian Senate.
