Der öffentliche Schulbau im Freistaat Bayern vor dem Hintergrund der gesellschaftlichen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen der ersten drei Jahrzehnte nach 1945 ist Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung. Hoher Schulraumbedarf und anspruchsvolle Zielsetzungen, wie Demokratisierung der Gesellschaft, kindgerechte Schule, Verbesserung der Bildungschancen und Bildungsexpansion, machten den Schulbau zu einer bedeutenden Bauaufgabe. Auf der Grundlage bildungspolitischer und pädagogischer Vorgaben entwarfen die Architekten – Vorbildern folgend – konzeptionell und baulich-gestalterisch neue Schulgebäude. Im Zuge der weiteren Entwicklung in der Bildungspolitik und Pädagogik, aber auch in der Baukonstruktion und Architektur, entstand ein breites Spektrum von Lösungen, das typologisch und nach Entwicklungsphasen geordnet untersucht und in den bundesdeutschen und internationalen Schulbaukontext gestellt wird.
