Summary

For thousands of years, East Asian lacquer, in particular, Chinese lacquer, has been dominated by a minimalist color palette featuring the use of black and red. Therefore, it is no accident that these colors have found great acceptance in the manufacture of European porcelain, even if they never achieved mainstream popularity. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the wealthy and cultured in European high society imported a wide range of East Asian black lacquer and porcelain, and leading manufactures, such as Meissen, produced many objects influenced by the black and red style. This book explores the effect of the lacquer craze on European porcelain manufacture.
