Summary

The technique of modifying an ECG to permit body surface recording of small-amplitude cardiac signals was a major step forward in the field of noninvasive clinical electrophysiology. Advances in the technique of high-resolution, or signal-averaged ECGs (SAECGs), have allowed the identification of clinical subsets of patients at high risk for ventricular arrhythmias, and provided for a better understanding of these arrhythmias. This text is written to provide the clinician with thorough working appreciation of the SAECG. Subject matter is selected to highlight the background and application of the SAECGs most practical aspects. The first two chapters deal with the origin and pathophysiology of cardiac late potentials. Subsequent chapters address issues of the SAECG, including technical aspects of acquisition and analysis, review currently accepted clinical uses, and present case studies. Finally, the book concludes with a deliberation on the evolution and future uses of the technique. Clinical cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiac surgeons, nurses, technologists, and others involved in the care of patients with arrhythmias will all appreciate this book's direct, accurate information.
