The Boy from Altheimer

Bill Bowen's memoir deals with many of the important events and years in twentieth-century Arkansas history. Born and raised during the Depression in Altheimer, Arkansas, Bowen trained as a fighter pilot during World War II, served as a tax attorney, was president and CEO of one of the largest banks in Arkansas, and ultimately became chief of staff for Gov. Bill Clinton. After Clinton announced his candidacy for president, it became Bowen's task to protect Clinton's interests and programs in the face of intense pressure from Lt. Gov. Jim Guy Tucker to become de facto governor. Even in retirement, Bowen continued to lead an energetic, productive life as he prepared himself for yet another career, serving two years as dean of the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, School of Law, which now bears his name.
