Summary

Pathology for Surgeons in Training , the second edition of the highly regarded Pathology for the FRCS, is an invaluable companion to surgical studies, providing a concise account of a vast range of essential and up to date information. The latest advances in molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, and clinical chemistry, as relevant to the practice of surgery, are summarized in a unique A-Z format, and systemic as well as basic pathology has now been included, reflecting the latest changes in surgical training requirements. This is a concise account of pathology as it applies to surgery (basic pathological mechanisms plus pathology of specific surgical conditions), presented in an A-Z format for quick reference. The main (alphabetically listed) headings present core topics that are tested in basic surgical exams, making the book an ideal revision text. In its first edition it was entitled Pathology for the Primary FRCS . Given both changes in UK surgical examinations and the book's much wider applicability, the title has been changed and the whole text completely re-written, with the addition of major new sections on systemic pathology (eg see 'Stomach'). The manuscript has been reviewed by a chemical pathologist, and a microbiologist to ensure that these aspects of the text represent current thinking in those specialties. This book provides the core information in pathology, clinical pathology, microbiology and related topics required by surgeons in training. It serves as a revision guide to allow successful preparation for the Fellowship, Associate Fellowship, and Membership examinations of the four UK and Eire, and the related Commonwealth surgical Colleges. Arranged in an A-Z format for easy revision, and fully indexed, the text provides systematic but concise summaries of all relevant major topics. It is set against a background of knowledge of modern immunology, molecular biology, genetics and chemistry with necessary reference to topics in blood transfusion and nuclear medicine. Particular emphasis is laid on the role of the laboratory in surgical diagnosis and management, with a bias towards topics often tested by examination.
