Summary

Ervin F. Carlisle-the namesake of Carlisle Elementary School in Delaware, Ohio-grew up on the South Side of Columbus, Ohio, and lived his entire adult life in Delaware. Born in 1908, Ervin F. Carlisle died in 1954 at the age of 46. Carlisle was an outstanding athlete and student leader at South High School and at Ohio Wesleyan University. He is a member of the Ohio Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame. He was the high school coach, then principal, and subsequently superintendent in the Delaware Schools. Ervin was also a prominent civic leader. During World War II, he organized defense training schools and city-wide childcare programs and assisted with war-time rationing. After the war, he served on the city School Board, chaired the Delaware Development Corporation, and presided over the transformation of city government in Delaware. This memoir narrates Ervin's life, describing schools, places and events in both Delaware and Columbus.

Author Biography

E. Fred Carlisle, Ervin's son was born, raised, and educated in Delaware, Ohio. He has degrees from Ohio Wesleyan, Ohio State and Indiana universities. He is a former academic who now lives in South Florida.
