Excerpts

She was letting Akil know that he was not welcomed here at this point, her lack of trust in him was the problem. She did not want him in the camp tonight for she could not trust him anymore. John sat up the bedding tonight placing his bed as close to hers as she'd allow. He was not going to have her to nervous to sleep, tomorrow was going to be trying as it was. Akil headed away from the camp that night, and they did not see Idogbe return for the rest of the night. Ralph and Jacob decided that the best thing was to trade off keeping watch between themselves for they did not think that John would be willing to leave Lily's side tonight. She was too up set about a lot of things, and the best thing for her was to let John calm her down. The sun rose with a haze over it, it seemed to have smoke covering it like a blanket. The birds were not singing like they had done most mornings, the rain was more like a mist. It gave the open vast prairie unsettling feeling to it. Lily was not paying attention to much on the sky as she was to the way Idogbe left last night. They broke camp so that there was no sign that they stopped there last night, the remains of the Suni was left as if a lion had it and not human. Lily made a point of making sure that everything seemed natural as she could. The smell of smoke was an other matter, she could do nothing to get the smell out of the air. Jacob guessed that they would be back to the camp site today sometime, and as they walked Lily made a point of looking back every now and then to see if anything was following them. She was hoping that it was all over, and she'd seen the last of them all. As the jeep came into view she knew that her hope was useless for there was someone near the jeep. As they got closer they saw that it was one of the women that they tried helping. It looked like it was Achan, but they were not sure for they were to far for their eyes to be sure of anything that they saw. They got closer, slowing their walk down so they could keep an eye out for anything that was out of place. As they got closer they could tell that it was Achan, she appeared to be unharmed, but they were not that close to tell for sure. There was still a good amount of distance between them and her. Achan watched as they walked her way, she tried to get in to the back of the one jeep that was up right, but was unable to pull herself up, so she ran to the far side. She put the jeep between her and them. As they got closer they saw Akil running to get between them and Achan. They stopped, Ralph drew his rifle, John and Jacob stood between Lily and Ralph. They had knives in their hands, not that the knives would do much, but it was better than being empty handed. They all stood there for what seemed like hours, before Akil decided that no one was in any danger at the moment. "She has be harmed by the werewolf, she must be kept away from Achan." Akil warned. "Sure, get away from our jeep. We are going back to the camp site and that is final." Jacob demanded taking control before temper flared. "Why do you need jeep?" Achan asked softly in almost perfect English. " For one it's ours, second we can take the damaged one back as well with us and hopefully repair it, and it's faster for US than walking, Lily is hurt and it'd be best for HER to ride in the jeep not walk." Jacob remarked still taking control. "How she get hurt?" Achan asked as if she had not heard Akil saying anything about Lily's injuries. "Oh, how about your secret pet?" Ralph snapped. He was not going to keep silent while this woman was playing stupid. "I see. I am sorry." Achan stated as if she truly meant that. "Now, get away from our jeep so we can leave." John now demanded, he wanted to get Lily in the jeep and resting the best she could until they got back to their camp site. He was tired of these people trying to play on sympathy when now they deserved none. "Please, let me help her. She has been kind to me and my sister. She did not have to be and she was, the least I personally can do is try to help her now. She helped my cousins, Adhiambo and Asha." Achan begged John. "No! It's cause secrets were kept that she has gotten harmed in the first place. We can treat these wounds when we get her back to camp. Out of the way." Ralph stated for John walking toward Achan with his rifle still drawn. He was going to get Lily and them to that Jeep if it killed him. He knew Lily had to be in lots of pain even though she made no complaint, nor sound to let him know one way for sure or not. He glanced back at Lily and saw that she was sitting on the ground sweat poring down her face and neck, she looked like she was about to pass out form the heat. The problem was that it was not hot today, it was wet from the light rain. If anything Lily should be showing sings of being cold or freezing not from being overheated.
