The cultural and historical implications of exile are examined through the detailed analysis of film language and theoretical exploration balanced by insightful close reading. Zeng establishes a semiotics of exile film as reflected in genre-upsetting, semiotics of photography, displaced film codes, Taoist pitfalls, postmodernism, and the symbol of female doubling.

Author Biography

Hong Zeng is an assistant professor of Chinese Language, Literature and Film at Carleton College. She received her PhD in Comparative and Chinese Literature from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Zeng has published five books, including The Semiotics of Exile in Literature (2009).
