Summary

Today's Internet has reached a crossroads. It has evolved from a source of information to a critical infrastructure, underpinning our lives and economies. The demand for more multi-media content, more interconnected devices, more users, a richer user experience, and services available any time and anywhere is increasing the pressure on existing networks and service platforms. A fundamental rearrangement of the Internet is required to enable it to meet future needs. The A-Cube project is one of a group of more than 50 projects researching various aspects of the Internet of Services. This group is the result of two calls for projects in the field of the Internet of Services made by the European Union's FP7 - ICT Programme for Research and Development. Within this group, the S-Cube project focuses on fundamental principles, techniques and methods for the service-based systems of the future, combining knowledge from top-level experts in the areas of grid, business process management, software engineering and human-computerinteraction. Some of the results of S-Cube are reflected in this book. This state-of-the-art survey contains 9 chapters. Starting with a presentation of theS-Cube research framework, developed to assist in unifying research communities and agendas across Europe, it gives an introduction to the vision of S-Cube and how the anticipated growth in services and service-based systems will have a profound effect on business and society. The remainder of the book addresses technologies required for realizing future service-based systems, and engineering principles, techniques and methods that use those technologies to ensure robust, manageable and adaptable systems.
