Excerpts

Breakfast is usually from 0800 - 1000; lunch from 1300-1530 is, for many Spaniards, the major meal of the day. In cities, tapas are widely available from m 1800-2000. Dinner is served from 2030-2300, often later in urban centres. This schedule has evolved to enable diners to evade the afternoon heat and enjoy the cooler evenings. Travellers wishing to dine on their own schedules should seek out cafeterias and bars offering tapas and raciones. A tapa is usually a small plate of meat, fish or snack food, whereas raciones are larger plates meant to either serve as a meal or be shared. Food and drink served at a table usually costs 10-15% more than if consumed at the bar. Most establishments display a menu at the entrance. This carta is not to be confused with the set menu del dia, usually offered at midday, that offers a good price on limited choices of appetiser, main dish and dessert with beverage. For regional home cooking seek out establishments serving comidas caseras
