Excerpts

"That's for turning a good boy into a bad one like you," said Doc. "My job is done here. I'm tired; I'm going to see Lucy." As soon as I heard that, I knew exactly who he was talking about and what he was about to do. I came out of hiding running toward Doc while shouting his name, but it was too late. He put a bullet in his own throat, fell to the ground and died instantly. Standing over Doc, I realized that I'd just witness the demise of a great man—a man once respected by all who encountered him. ... It just goes to show you that no matter how much education you have, no matter how much respect you have, nor how many dignitaries you have met, when you lose someone that you love, someone that is very close to you, a part of you is lost too. In Doc's case, when he lost his wife, Lucy, who died of cancer, he lost part of his mind. ... It's unfortunate that a man of his caliber had been reduced to a status such as this and now dead by his own hand. Continuing to stare at Doc's still body, I heard Roscoe and his crew scattering through the bushes. It seemed that they were leaving no trace that we were even in the area. the fact that the cops took their time in answering a call, and somebody heard the shots and did call, gave us ample time to cover our tracks.
