Summary

Many of the regimental monuments tell stories and provide details of the battle that few ever read. They display unit casualty figures for the Battle of Gettysburg, and in some cases, for the entire Civil War. They show where the soldiers of the regiment were from, and where they fought. There is a great deal of information that can be learned by simply reading what each monument says. This book provides this information in a clear, easy to read format that can be enjoyed in the comfort of your home, or sitting on the boulders of Devil's Den. It is meant to open the door to the monuments of the Gettysburg National Military Park, which for so long, have kept their silent vigil over the ground that cost so many, so much. The Gettysburg National Military Park contains perhaps the largest outdoor collection of stone and bronze sculptures in the world, and is certainly the most memorialized battlefield in the United States. Visitors flock to the battlefield to witness in person the hallowed ground of Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, and Devil's Den. And while they may be drawn by the history of Gettysburg, more often than not, they are compelled by the monuments, markers, and tablets that dot the landscape. In some cases, the monument designs are elaborate, in others, simple - but in all cases, they serve as permanent memorials to the brave soldiers of the North and South who fought with all of their hearts and souls and died for something in which they believed. Observing the monuments often sparks questions such as: What is inscribed on the monuments? How many monuments are there? What do the symbols on the monuments mean? What different kinds of monuments are there, and what are some of the most elaborate? If you've asked yourself or others these questions, or others like them, then this is the book for you! Their Silent Vigil, Volume One, contains drawings of every regimental monument clearly displaying every inscription and feature. Look for the soon to be released second volume in the series, containing the remainder of the monuments and markers, including the state monuments and bronze statues!
