Summary

Silverback Island is set in the 1820s, and begins with the hero and narrator, John Randolph Smith, setting sail on a whaling ship off Nantucket Island as second in command. A suspenseful and harrowing adventure unfolds, as the Captain of the ship goes mad, and ultimately the ship sinks in a terrible storm and the Captain is killed. John is left in charge and must rise to the challenge of leader under the most dire circumstances, as he and his men are lost at sea. When John and his crew finally make landfall, they are forced to traverse dangerous terrain, and defend themselves against powerful, beastly enemies, who do not immediately reveal their identity. As they attempt to make their way to a city in the distance, the men do their best to survive, but several are lost along the way. When they reach the city, they find the inhabitants have all been killed. John finally comes to understand that the same beasts that have been taunting them, have murdered the entire population of the city. The beasts are a group of vengeful gorillas, once enslaved by the people of the city. The gorillas are eerily human-like, and the island seems to have powers that John cannot explain. John struggles to understand the meaning of his experiences and power of the island. Ultimately, John meets the city's lone survivor, a little girl named Till. John and Till's relationship develops into one of true camaraderie and love as John steps in as the parent figure for the poor girl who has lost everything. Through Till and a visitor from the spiritual realm, John learns that the people who had inhabited the island were the descendants of the lost city of Atlantis. As the history of the island is revealed to him, so too are the great mysteries of Atlantis. Silverback Island addresses issues of faith in the spiritual realm, and in humanity. Silverback Island is a unique science-fiction novel that enthusiasts of survival adventures, as well as lovers of the supernatural will enjoy.
