My alcohol was my solution to life. My alcohol was my guide. It made the bad choices seem not so bad and the good choices seem better. Alcohol intensified every feeling I ever had. Until one day, all I was going for was the feeling of alcohol. That was the only feeling I wanted. I got to escape into my pretend, private world where everything was just fine—unaddressed, ignored, chaotic—but fine. Then one day my alcohol turned on me. I got into trouble. I swore it off. Then it told me it was sorry. I knew secretly I couldn't live without it. I thought I took it back, in actuality it seduced me back. This happened hundreds of times before the fleeting thought came that I should end this relationship. But I couldn't I was addicted. Not having my alcohol guide was worse than having it. I didn't trust it, but I didn't trust me either. It's okay, said alcohol guide I promise it will be different this time. It never was, only worse—slowly worse. I could trust myself no longer, the noise in my head—incessant. I can no longer trust others. I do nothing—somehow expecting a miracle. It is an enslavement with no escape, and me—no longer the master.
