Summary

Carter illuminates and validates the vital role of visioning in social education. Visioning enhances powerful social studies by orienting students towards a future without harm in response to conflict. While including enduring concepts and modern theories, she demonstrates how humanity's global quest for peace continues in the pursuit of positive visions. The book features peace in social education with instructional recommendations, planning resources and descriptions of transdisciplinary learning. It elaborates mindful citizenship across social, environmental, ethical, geographic, economic and political realms. The standards it includes support social and emotional literacy as well as conflict management by all school members.

Author Biography

Candice C. Carter, Ph.D., is widely known for her research and development in peace education. Her scholarship in that field has been published in prior books, book chapters, and articles. Four of her books about peace education and peace philosophy have been published by Palgrave Macmillan. She has presented her research on peace-focused education in several continents as well as throughout her homeland of North America. She is an Associate Dean in Saint Martin's University at Lacey, Washington, USA, where she also teaches courses in social education. After she taught in primary and secondary schools of different regions and economic levels, Candice became a Social Studies Mentor Teacher for one school district and a Title One teacher in another. In each context, she recognized the hope of students and adults for peace.
