Summary

These essays belong to different intellectual genres: while some document gender gaps and inequality, others delineate the ways in which gender structures are structured by the institutions of family, kinship, caste, labour, sexuality and the state. In the last two decades or more, much of feminist scholarship has been directed towards underlining the social construction of gender. This book should act as a catalyst for further discussions on engendering the discipline and for developing a sociological feminism. It provides an intensive overview of gender sociologists in India.
