Summary

The Soldier's Orphan is a novel virtually forgotten by modern readers, but one that deserves reassessment with the publication of this critical edition. Abduction, secrets, incarceration in a lunatic asylum, and a despotic evil guardian; the fate of Louisa Fitzormond seems stereotypical of a Gothic romance, but the novel's exploration of society at all levels, as well as the roles and limitations for women demonstrate its similarities to novels of moral etiquette.Raised by guardians, Louisa's fate is intertwined with the neighbouring Stanley family: her closest friend is Miss Stanley, the eldest daughter; the man she loves is Walter, the son, and the jealousy of the younger daughter, Armida - whose husband Lord Belmour openly admires Louisa - propels the plot and causes the unwitting Louisa torment and distress. Despite the story's innumerable twists and turns, its conclusion brings Louisa reconciliation, a rightful inheritance and a happy marriage.
