Summary

Myra P. Brooks, my aunt, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father, Arthur Peterson, was the last attorney general to Queen Liliukalani whose reign was taken over by Americans who lived there. He was put in prison in San Francisco where he died of pneumonia.Myra's mother and my grandmother, Nettie Peterson, later married my grandfather, Capt. John Edgar of the United States Navy. They were stationed at many Naval Base hospitals since Capt Edgar was a chief surgeon.Because of the many moves and numerous houses the Edgar family lived in, Myra had no place to call home. She was also home schooled due to these moves which she didn't care for.Her love of flowers, gardens, and nature found expression in poetry, letters to her friends and family, as well as her own personal life. She was passionate about her faith in God, her husband, George, nature and world peace. Her first hand account of the hurricane of Sept. 19, 1919 in Port Aransas, Texas is so descriptive and accurate. The historical museum in Port Aransas has a copy of her memoirs with her poem "Hurricane of Death" along with photos before and after the storm.Myra was definitely a survivor and tried to make all the houses she lived in beautiful in the inside as well as the outside full of flowers, gardens and love...Linda Edgar
