Excerpts

I placed the phone on the receiver before she could finish her thought. I felt myself breaking down, and I knew I had to get out of my apartment as soon as possible. I grabbed my keys and my leather coat from the bedroom, and decided to go for a ride. I observed the patterns of my breath in the moonlight as I fumbled with my keys in the car door. I fought to no avail to get the images of Mia and Kevin out of my mind. I turned to look at my passenger seat, and Mia was sitting there smiling at me. I looked in my rearview mirror, and the two of them were in my backseat. I shut my eyes tight and started the engine. A gust of cold air blew from the A/C panel as I struggled to adjust the heat on this cold November night. I cursed the chilly temperature because I knew it would take my car a while to heat up. My hands were shaking and my head throbbed as I pulled out of the carport. Everything seemed to move in a slow, blurred motion as I tried to get a grip on things. I simply couldn't process what I had just heard. I didn't want to.
