Summary

Sparrow in the Machine is a collection of poems centering on personal growth, reflection, injustice, and love. Sparrows are wild and are adept at finding their way in the city or the countryside. A machine is cold and unyielding, which represents the unnatural world that we humans have created here on earth. In Sparrow in the Machine, Gregory Carlyle describes his life's experiences and hopes in his unique subtle poetic style.

The poems, ranging from neo-soul culture to ancestral pressures to romance, were written with a personal touch. At times, you might feel as though you happened across a forgotten drawer of unread letters or in the Deep South feeling the thick air of oppression. In Sparrow in the Machine, Gregory Carlyle connects you to his past and present with his cool, balanced poetry.

Author Biography

Gregory Carlyle Warner is a poet, author and spoken word artist hailing from Hampton Roads, Virginia; currently living and working in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. He is an U.S. Army veteran and holds various degrees from American University, Webster University, and Old Dominion University. His art started to manifest as a young man, but it was through the journey of life, where his unique soulful form of poetic expressions fully matured.

Gregory Carlyle's journey through love, military life, separation, divorce, and continued battles to be an integral part of his three daughters' lives proved instrumental in his development and eventual inner peace.

"My hope is that everyone finds their true purpose in life through living life...the joys, the sorrows, the good, and the bad".

Gregory Carlyle's first published work 100 Years to be Lost: A Poetry Collection reached #1 in "New Releases for African-American Poetry" on Amazon, where this work remained in the top ten for several weeks. Combined with Gregory Carlyle's personal and professional experiences, this journey takes a new turn exploring recent (and not so recent) societal challenges --- political unrest, social upheaval and life changed forever is a resounding theme in this latest piece.
