Summary

The new EU member states have been facing a wide range of planning and urban development problems since the transition in 2004. Bringing together specially commissioned, carefully selected articles on each of the ten countries, this volume examines these problems and their relevance to the EU accession. Topics range from brownfield redevelopment in the Czech Republic, to urban sprawl in Hungary, to the upgrading and integration of marginalized Roma settlements in Eastern Slovakia to sustainable coastal management in Cyprus. The first section of the book provides an EU wide overview, written by Simon Davoudi, while the second section looks at spatial planning at the national level and the third part contains articles dealing with metropolitan and town planning. These are followed by a concluding chapter which argues that, while impending EU membership has long influenced - and sometimes improved - decision-making in the region, several key issues remain riddled with idiosyncratic problems and continue to be primarily addressed at the national or regional level.
