Stabilization and Structural Adjustment in Polandexamines the economic policies implemented by the Solidarity-led government in Poland following the end of communist rule. On attaining office in 1989, the government faced two enormous tasks: restoring stability to an economy prone to hyperinflation and replacing a crumbling command system with a market mechanism. The contributors to this study analyze the transition in Poland and relate it to other former communist countries. The book first outlines the economic and intellectual climate prior to the introduction of the government's bold plan to liberalize and stabilize the economy. It examines the macroeconomic situation in this period, considers the structural aspects of transition in both industry and agriculture, discusses the social aspects of transition, and concludes with a chronology of major political and economic events.
