Stan On Guard is a sequel to Call Me Stan, in which the narrator, a self-described immortal under investigation for a horrific crime, takes his police interviewer through a wry, anachronistic series of historical reminiscences across 3200 years of western history. A thread through that novel is Stan’s effort to understand why he doesn’t die. Toward the end of the novel he is confronted by a figure from his past—Tróán, daughter of King Priam of Troy—who, justifiably blaming him for the death of her son Tror, shoots him and leaves him for dead.
