Nell Irvin Painter is the Edwards Professor of American History, Emerita, at Princeton University and the author of several books, including Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol; Southern History Across the Color Line; Creating Black Americans; and The History of White People (2009). She is featured in the PBS multipart series "The Progressive Era with Bill Moyers"
