Excerpts

SHORT CUTS TO STYLE

Interiors should never be static and unchanging. Moods change, lifestyles evolve and seasons bring their own magic. The kind of home I feel comfortable in is one that can go with the flow. This does not mean I am in favour of throwing out yesterday and buying a complete tomorrow—that would be both ridiculously expensive and wildly unsettling. It means slight shifts here and there with a repertoire of soft furnishings that disappear and reappear to great effect. It means having the courage to move things around to give them fresh impact. It is a state of mind that never thinks of a room as definitively "finished," because to do so would fix you to the spot and leave no space for new enthusiasms.

It is amazing the effect a little courage has. Moving a picture from one side of the room to another can make all the difference between regarding the picture as visual wallpaper and actually seeing it again with fresh eyes. A change of curtains or blinds can dramatically alter the way light enters the room and also highlight or fudge an architectural feature. I love to play with throws and cushion covers, using creamy linens and crisp cottons for the cool looks of spring and summer, and then later on in the year, as winter draws in, replacing them with a snuggle of fake fur or big cosy cable knits.

In this book my aim is to show you how to use style as a quick fix without having to resort to complete redecoration. As well as my own apartment, the book shows many inspired decorative touches I've found int he homes of some very creative people who have been generous enough to let us photograph there. You will find ingenious ways to make a room lighter and brighter or warmer and cosier, and get some spectacular ideas for "dressing" a room for a special occasion. This is a particular passion of mine as I love the idea of using a home as a threatrical set for staging weddings, Christmases and other special occasions. You will see also how rehanging pictures and rearranging collections can alter the mood of a room completely, and discover the massive impact that seasonal flowers and beautiful table settings can have on any interior.
