Summary

These stories are a coming-of-age tale from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. The first two tell of growing up in rural Oregon at a time when young people walked everywhere, went barefoot all summer, and swam in rivers and lakes, instead of pools. The stories are filled with details about Larry's life in Lebanon, a small farming and logging town, and about picking hops near Buena Vista during the Depression.In the final three stories, and the bulk of this book, Larry tells of serving in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, and how a combination of initiative and luck put him in the cockpit of a photo-reconnaissance plane and then brought him home again to Lebanon.
