Author Biography

John Szarlan received his M.A. in psychology and special education from Clark University. Mr. Szarlan joined the Department of Counseling Services at the University of Connecticut in 1994 as a learning skills counselor and served as a part of the Institute for Teaching and Learning’s design group that concentrated on helping students understand how to learn more effectively. Mr. Szarlan was a noted presenter at professional conferences, especially the First Year Experience National Conferences. Mr. Szarlan was the coauthor of

“Case Studies for First-Year Experience Students.” Mr. Szarlan was the driving force behind “Striving for Excellence” and passed away unexpectedly before the book was finished.

 

Suman Singha received a Ph.D. from Cornell University; his research has focused on plant biotechnology and developmental physiology. In 1990, he accepted the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Plant Science at the University of Connecticut, and was appointed Associate Dean in 1995. Dr. Singha was named an American Council on Education Fellow in 2000. Since then he has served as interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Vice Provost for Academic Administration. He was named Senior Vice Provost at the University of Connecticut in 2008. Dr. Singha has been recognized for teaching excellence and is the co-author of “Case Studies for First-Year

Experience Students.”

 

Scott W. Brown received his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in Psychology, focusing on the field of educational psychology. Since joining the University of Connecticut in 1980, Dr. Brown has served as a Professor of Educational Psychology and the Head of the Educational Psychology Department from 1994 to 2001. He was named a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science in 2004 and as an inaugural Fellow of the American Educational Research Association in 2008. Dr. Brown’s research interests include learning, cognition and problem solving. Currently he is co-director of the GlobalEd 2 project, promoting learning in social studies, science and writing for middle school students.
