Author Biography

A leading authority on modern Greek history, C. M. Woodhouse (1917-2001) was a prizewinning classical scholar at Oxford, and in 1943 was appointed to command the Allied Military Mission to the Greek guerrillas in German-occupied Greece. In 1945 he served in the British embassy in Athens, and the next year was secretary-general to the Allied Mission for Observing Greek Elections. Woodhouse was subsequently a Member of Parliament for Oxford and president of the Classical Association
