Summary

Studies in Etymology is a textbook for a course or self study in building vocabulary through an understanding of Latin and Greek roots and the grammar of word formation. The first half of the book is devoted to Latin roots and word formation through the influence of Latin grammar and language development. The second half of the book deals with Greek, the nuances of Greek grammar and syntax, as well as the influences of such things as Greek mythology on the creation of words in English. A special section is devoted to science and medicine.

Author Biography

Charles W. Dunmore was faculty at New York University for many years, serving for some time as the chairman of that department. He was a consulting editor on Latin and Greek etymology for the "World Book Encyclopedia," and is the author of "Selections from Ovid" and co-author, with Rita M. Fleischer, of "Studies in Etymology," both Focus Publishing. Rita Fleischer is the Administrative Director for Foreign Languages at the CUNY Graduate Center. She did her graduate and undergraduate work at New York University. She has taught at public and private schools in the metropolitan area, co-authored several texts, and taught at the intensive Latin/Greek Institute of Brooklyn College and the City Univerity Graduate Center.
