Summary

The sudan is the largest country in Africa. For millennia it has been the zone of contact between the peoples of Central Africa and those emanating from the Mediterrancan world. The National Museum in Khartoum houses one of the finest collections of antiquities in the world and is of international importance; however, the vast quantity of material is in storage and the rarely been seen by the public. With the help of 470 colour illustrations, this exhibition catalogue displays and discusses some of the finest objects produced through all phases of human settlement, from the Palacolithic through to the Islamic period, including sections on gold, pottery and funerary culture. Most are recent discoveries and few have been viewed outside the Sudan. The publication of these finds together for the first time highlights the contrast between the world views of many Sudanese cultures: from the sacrificed person--to the humble graves of the Christian rulers: from the grandiose temples built by the Egyptian pharaohs to the churches and mosques of later periods.
