Summary

Changes in our lives from one day to the next are most often subtle and unnoticed. Yet change occurs and we are molded over time from youth to adulthood. The period of years spanning the Great Depression of the 1930's through World War II during the first half of the decade of the 1940's is an era perhaps like no other. The subject of this book, a young farm boy, lived a simple day to day life, knowing little more than home and community. A changing world pulled him from the simple farm life of his father to enter the modern era in a world community. This era, starting in the hard times of depression, would bring the telephone, electricity, automobiles, tractors, and improved roads along with the normal growth and changes in a family of seven. Swen's story carries him from a rural Northeastern Minnesota farm to the violence and pain of World War 11 in Europe. Though he will never forget his roots, the world and his life will never be the same. This book was inspired by a great-aunt who taught in country schools and my parents who talked of walking to attend such schools, and living through this period of time. The farm work was a personal experience during my younger years. Also, my daughter suggested these experiences should be recorded.

Author Biography

Experiences with young people, while teaching in the classroom, bring a reality to the characters in Mr. Mostoller's books. A thirty-five-year-veteran teacher, holding a bachelor's and master's degrees in education, he has had the pleasure of working with literally thousands of young people. Making his home in north-central Minnesota, where he and his wife have two grown sons and two grown daughters and now ten grandchildren, family has always been central to his life. While enjoying his years of teaching, an interest has been watching young people choose books to read. He has been fascinated with the structure of a good book, especially in developing realistic characters to be identified with, in experiences as real as life. From the characters' stories in his other books To Catch a Falling Star. Lisa's Lifeline, and Randy. Walter, and Rex to his latest characters in Swede good things can be drawn, like the importance of family, honesty, and overcoming life's problems, all in a story that holds the reader from start to finish.
