Fue tomando diferentes medios de expresión: la música, la canción y la danza, sin letras en sus comienzos, pero enunciando un importante número de sensaciones de todos aquellos hombres de trabajo que iban convirtiendo a Buenos Aires en la gran urbe. Gustavo Varela nos muestra al tango como una expresión popular cuya raíz es social y política. Nos trae, además de los temas que identificaban a aquellos hombres, la cara gráfica de esas primeras composiciones, prostibularias, alegres, dramáticas, nostálgicas y sentimentales. Una pasión, la del tango, ilustrada con las tapas de las partituras antiguas, que exponen los aspectos psicológicos y sociales de aquellos individuos de las primeras décadas que, en una de las ciudades más cosmopolitas de la época, dieron nacimiento al tango. 

Author Biography

Gustavo Varela is a professor of philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires. He has led numerous courses and workshops throughout Argentina. His other books include Mal de tango and Tensiones filosóficas.
