The Tanya is the fundamental work of Hasidic thought. In it, Rabbi Schneur Zalman (b. 1745 in Liozna, Russia), also known as the Alter Rebbe, deals with the inner human struggle, the anatomy of the soul, and the ideal towards which Jews should strive.
