Summary

Helen Thayer, author of the bestselling book Polar Dream, was the first woman to walk to the North Pole-an achievement she accomplished at the age of fifty. During that solo odyssey, she acquired an Inuit half-wolf dog named Charlie, who became her companion and protector. Never one to sit still, Helen and her husband wanted to better understand the somewhat mysterious wolf side of Charlie's heritage. So the three of them set out on foot, first into the far northern Canadian Yukon and then to the Arctic to live among a wild wolf packs. In the remote Yukon, Helen, Bill, and Charlie set a camp when they found themselves within the roaming range of a family of wolves. Over a period of weeks, they moved their camps increasingly closer to the wolf den-until the camp was a mere 100 feet from the opening of the den. The arrival of this new family of humans and a half wolf was greeted with apprehension on the part of the wolves, but over time a trust was established because Charlie was accepted by the humans and the wolves as the alpha male of the newly arrived "pack." This book recounts the first time a dog has bridged the gap between humans and wild wolves.
