Author Biography

Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist, editor, orator, author, statesman, and reformer. William Wells Brown escaped from slavery to become a prominent abolitionist, lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian. Harriet E. Wilson, a former slave, was the first female African-American novelist.
